Description
Female Broad-billed hummingbird in flight feeding from flowers of the Fairy Duster.
This photograph was taken in the natural Arizona sunlight without the aid of flash. A hummingbird wing beats 12-80 times per SECOND! Getting a still capture of a hummingbird's wing in flight without the aid of a flash to freeze motion is difficult indeed!
Here you can the beautiful iridescence of her back and tail feathers that is the result of light refracting from the structure of her feathers. The resulting colors are much more vivid and iridescent than those of birds with only pigmented feathers. Hummingbirds are little jewels!
