Description
Colorful male Anna's hummingbird with a drop of nectar hanging from the tip of his bill. The morning light has made his normally pink-rose gorget turn a rainbow of colors. The iridescence of his feathers is not pigment and is due to the refraction of light off the structures of the feathers themselves. The resulting colors are much more vivid and iridescent than those of birds with only pigmented feathers. Hummingbirds are little jewels!
